FDM Group
At the heart of FDM’s offering is the ExForces Programme (EFP), a comprehensive onboarding and development pathway tailored for veterans.
FDM is a global consultancy powering the people behind tech and innovation for over 30 years. In the UK, the company operates with over 1,600 employees and a model that prioritises the reskilling of individuals from a range of backgrounds – including graduates, returners and particularly ex-forces personnel. Through its award-winning Ex-Forces Programme (EFP), FDM offers structured support to veterans transitioning into civilian careers, equipping them with commercial experience and qualifications that match their military strengths with private sector needs.
All applicants are asked during the recruitment process if they have a military background. This ensures tailored support from the start and feeds into a broader tracking system used to monitor progress and outcomes. To date, FDM has supported 861 veterans through its Ex-Forces Programme and employed an additional 52 veterans in internal roles. The company also tracks retention after the initial two-year programme, with 33% of participants staying on with FDM, 40% transitioning to permanent roles with clients, and 27% moving on after successful assignments.
FDM’s veteran recruitment strategy is multi-faceted and proactive. It includes close collaboration with the Career Transition Partnership, Forces Employment Charity, Mission Motorsport, and Security Cleared Expos. The company also taps into Regimental Associations, the White Ensign Association, Leavers Link, and LinkedIn to reach service leavers across the UK. Veterans are guaranteed an interview or assessment should they meet the basic criteria, a policy that opens the door to a more inclusive hiring process.
At the heart of FDM’s offering is the Ex-Forces Programme (EFP), a comprehensive onboarding and development pathway tailored for veterans. Following a successful interview, participants enter the FDM Skills Lab – a bespoke, veteran-led training environment focused on translating military experience into the language and practice of business and IT. Training can include qualifications such as Scrum Master, ITIL and PRINCE2. Veterans receive a stipend during training and pay nothing for their upskilling. Once on assignment with clients, veterans continue to receive mentorship and coaching, with many returning later in their careers as Senior Consultants, or staying in contact with the business through the Alumni Network.
