SP Energy networks launches veterans EMPower programme
SP Energy Networks has unveiled a new 12-month initiative — the EMPower Network Programme — designed specifically to help ex-military veterans transition into civilian employment in the energy sector.

The programme aims to unlock career opportunities and provide tailored development for those who have recently left the Armed Forces.
As a leading Distribution and Transmission Network Operator, SP Energy Networks keeps electricity flowing across Central and Southern Scotland, North Wales, Merseyside, Cheshire, and North Shropshire. The EMPower programme marks the company’s latest step in expanding a diverse and skilled workforce to support the UK’s energy transformation.
A Tailored Pathway to Success
Launching on 5 November 2025, the programme is open to applicants with at least three years of military service who left the Armed Forces no more than two years prior to the start date. Candidates must also hold a full driving licence to accommodate travel to various work sites.
Participants will benefit from a fully customised development plan, created following a review of their career goals and current skillsets. The scheme includes formal training, hands-on rotational placements, and mentorship from experienced professionals, enabling participants to gain practical insights into the energy industry and SP Energy Networks' operations.
Real Voices from the Frontline
The EMPower programme builds on the success of existing veteran employees, such as Steven Bell, a former Infantry soldier now working as a Project Manager in Transmission, and Heather Heaton, who served with the Queen’s Lancashire Regiment and now leads stakeholder engagement at SP Energy Networks. These success stories highlight the strong alignment between military skills and the demands of the energy sector.
Open Days and Recruitment Drive
SP Energy Networks is hosting dedicated open days to offer prospective applicants a closer look at the programme and the company’s supportive workplace culture. Interested individuals can register via the official EMPower Programme Form.

A Critical Moment for Energy and Employment
“This is an exciting time to be in the networks business,” said Nicola Connelly, CEO of SP Energy Networks. “We have developed a workforce strategy to grow our business through recruitment, retain our existing employees, and provide opportunities to upskill and reskill our people. Britain is undergoing the biggest grid transformation in its history, and this is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to be part of it.”
Backed by a £24 billion investment in the UK energy network by 2028, SP Energy Networks’ EMPower programme represents a powerful opportunity for veterans to transition into meaningful, future-proof careers that support national infrastructure and sustainability goals.
