Transitioning into security and emergency medical training: Kenneth Walker’s story

He joined the Royal Air Force in 1996, serving with the RAF Regiment. The most meaningful part of his service was his time with the full-time RAF Mountain Rescue Team at RAF Leuchars, which remains the highlight of his years in uniform.
When he left the RAF in 2006, he did so without a clear sense of purpose or direction. Like many Service leavers, he had strong operational experience but few academic qualifications and little understanding of how to translate his military background into a civilian career. He left the military without a plan, and for a long time was unsure where he fitted. Almost overnight, the structure, identity and certainty he had relied on for years were gone.
His early steps after leaving were uncertain. He worked in civilian security management roles before joining the Scottish Ambulance Service in 2008, where he later qualified as a paramedic. As his career progressed, he focused on developing his clinical and instructor qualifications, often studying alongside shift work. Education became a way of rebuilding confidence as much as opening doors. In hindsight, he recognises that leaving without a plan is far more common than people admit.
That personal journey led directly to the creation of MK Safety Solutions in 2013. He built the business from the ground up while still working operationally, with a clear focus on medical and security training for people operating in high-risk or demanding environments. Only later did he fully realise how valuable structured learning and funded qualifications could be in helping people navigate civilian career pathways.
Today, MK Safety Solutions delivers pre-hospital medical training ranging from first aid to specialist medical support, including CPD for paramedics, as well as training for the security sector, including close protection teams. The company works with security firms, contractors, charities and individuals across the UK, many of whom are current or former Service personnel transitioning into civilian security or protective roles.

What sets MK Safety Solutions apart is the support provided alongside and after the training. Many learners come not only for a qualification, but for guidance, reassurance and a clearer understanding of the options available within the security and medical sectors. This support may be as simple as talking through realistic pathways, explaining what a qualification actually leads to, or reassuring someone that they are not behind. The company stays in touch with many learners long after their course has finished, offering ongoing support as they find their feet and continue to develop. This ongoing relationship is why much of the business is built on personal recommendation and trust.
As Kenneth himself has reflected: “I didn’t need someone to give me a job, I needed someone to help me see what was possible.”
Alongside running the business, he continues to work as a frontline paramedic with the Scottish Ambulance Service and as a Practice Education Lead, supporting paramedic students through their training. Until recently, he also worked as a Lead Medical Instructor for a security company, delivering medical training for personnel operating in challenging environments overseas. This ensures that the training delivered through MK Safety Solutions remains current and grounded in real operational practice.
He left the Services without purpose or direction, but through persistence, learning and the support of others, he was able to build a career and a business rooted in security and emergency medical training. His aim now is to make that transition clearer for those coming after him, reinforcing the message that leaving the Services without a clear plan does not mean someone is behind or alone.
