Transitioning into power utilities: Shaun Goater’s story

CASE STUDY

28 Mar, 2024

Final Rank: Reconnaissance Vehicle Commander
Years Served: 18

Shaun Goater's military journey began in September 1988. Serving the Army's Household Cavalry Regiment, Shaun's roles ranged from a Reconnaissance Vehicle Commander to a D&M instructor. However like many servicemen and women, the time came in November 2016 when Shaun decided to hang up his boots and embrace the civilian world.

In addition to his military skills, Shaun had already invested in his future by acquiring several civilian qualifications during his service, including the NEBOSH General certificate, City & Guilds Level 3 award in Electrical installations, and a Level 6 NVQ Diploma in Construction Contract General.

Leveraging Enhanced Learning Credits

Recognizing the power of continuous learning, Shaun tapped into the Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) initiative. "I first used my ELC credits to redo my GCSEs," he recalls, aiming to improve upon his school grades. As his exit from the army approached, Shaun strategically used the credits again, focusing on qualifications that would bolster his career prospects.

Shaun's advice to his peers about ELC? "Use them. They are there to be used. This may sound harsh, but it is your future. Remember, IT'S FREE TRAINING."

The Resettlement Roadmap

While his service commitment was complete, Shaun's career journey was far from over. His initial foray into civilian life saw him manage areas for a cleaning company. While this wasn't the ultimate goal, it provided a unique insight into civilian work and served as a stepping stone towards bigger aspirations.

Shaun's efforts bore fruit. He secured a position as a Project Manager at UK Power Networks Services - a nationwide expert in distributed energy solutions and power distribution. In this role, Shaun oversees a myriad of projects, from inception to completion, ensuring quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

UK Power Networks Services: More than Just an Employer

Reflecting on his current workplace, Shaun expresses immense gratitude. "They really do look after their employees and are committed to helping ex-forces personnel gain employment within the industry.” The company's dedication isn't just on paper – they have a dedicated Ex-Forces team, ensuring the camaraderie and unique experiences of service personnel are cherished and celebrated.

Service Skills in Civvy Street

Shaun says his time in the army has equipped him with invaluable skills: "Being ex-forces gives us a very good idea of how to manage things, be it personnel or materials.” This, coupled with the discipline and structured approach learned in the military, can make ex-servicemen and women useful assets in the civilian workspace.

Final Words of Wisdom

Reflecting on his transition, Shaun emphasises the importance of preparation, adaptability, and utilising available resources. He advises service leavers: "Do as many courses as you can, think about what you really want to do, and most of all, use all of your resettlement entitlements. They're there to help you."

Shaun Goater’s journey, like many others, serves as a testament to the potential that lies within service personnel, able to be harnessed in their next career chapter.
