SeaBot Maritime delivers specialist training for the maritime autonomy sector, including the ELCAS-approved, MCA-recognised Generic MASS Remote Operator course. SeaBot Maritime is also a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant.

Founded in 2017 and based in Portsmouth, SeaBot Maritime trains the people who operate, manage and supervise uncrewed and autonomous vessels. Its courses offer Service leavers a route into one of the fastest-growing areas of the marine sector.

Maritime autonomy is moving from trials to everyday operations, and employers need operators and supervisors who can run uncrewed vessels safely and to a recognised standard. SeaBot Maritime specialises in this workforce development, supporting both commercial and defence organisations as they bring uncrewed, autonomous and AI-enabled systems into service.

Training is delivered in three areas:

Maritime Autonomy and Remote Operations: the MCA-recognised Generic MASS Remote Operator course is ELCAS-approved and develops the core competence needed to operate uncrewed surface vessels. Additional training courses include Advanced USV Operations, focusing on live mission planning and execution, and ROC Supervisor, covering Remote Operations Centre supervision and mission management.
USV Survey and Hydrography: collecting, processing, analysing and integrating hydrographic and bathymetric survey data using USVs, GIS platforms and modern geospatial workflows.
UAV Survey and Mapping: UAV-based surveying, LiDAR data collection, GIS analysis and spatial data integration for mapping, environmental and infrastructure projects.

Training is delivered through SeaBot Maritime’s facilities in Plymouth and Southampton, supported by an online knowledge hub, e-learning and simulation. The company is a Maritime UK Solent Launchpad partner and works with the National Oceanography Centre in Southampton and the University of Plymouth Marine Station.

For those leaving the Armed Forces, many skills developed during Service are directly relevant to maritime autonomy. Watchkeeping, navigation, mission planning, operating technical systems under pressure and leading small teams all provide a strong foundation for remote operations. SeaBot Maritime’s MCA-recognised Generic MASS Remote Operator course helps participants apply this experience to operating uncrewed surface vessels. Additional training courses include Advanced USV Operations and ROC Supervisor, supporting further development in live operations, supervision and mission management.

SeaBot Maritime is an ELCAS-approved provider (number 14725), enabling eligible Service personnel and leavers to use their Enhanced Learning Credits towards the MCA-recognised Generic MASS Remote Operator course. The company is also a signatory to the Armed Forces Covenant and works with defence organisations as well as commercial operators.

Alongside scheduled courses, SeaBot Maritime offers training needs analysis, curriculum design, custom e-learning, operating procedures, and certification and compliance support for organisations adopting autonomous technology.

Maritime
MCA-recognised Generic MASS Remote Operator (M001) A five-day, in-person, ELCAS-approved course for new and experienced mariners, developing the knowledge and practical skills needed to operate Uncrewed Surface Vessels (USVs) safely in line-of-sight and beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) modes. Recognised by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency under MGN 703, the course combines theory, simulation and live on-the-water operations, with Remote Operations Centre training and practical experience on multiple USV platforms and control systems. The syllabus covers the conduct of MASS operations, legislation and industry guidance, MASS systems, human factors, emergency scenarios, mission planning, USV navigation and handling, and COLREGs. Participants also explore situational awareness, communications, risk management, cyber security, and AI and machine learning. Live exercises build competence in vessel control, manoeuvring, berthing, mission execution, and day and night operations in confined and open waters. The course is suited to maritime professionals moving into remote and autonomous operations, organisations building in-house USV capability, and personnel supporting ROUV or MASS operations. Entry requirements: aged 18 or over, a valid ENG1/ML5 or equivalent medical certificate, and an appropriate maritime qualification or Certificate of Competency. Delivered through SeaBot Maritime’s facilities in Plymouth and Southampton, with a maximum of 10 students per course. Courses run throughout the year. Course fee: £3,995 excluding VAT.
