Mott MacDonald
Mott MacDonald operates a bespoke Armed Forces Pathway designed to help veterans and military leavers transition successfully into civilian roles. The pathway includes ringfenced positions exclusively available to members of the Armed Forces community and uses a tailored application form that allows candidates to describe their military experience and transferable skills. Candidates are offered one-to-one support in writing CVs, preparing for interviews, and are matched with a ‘buddy’ – typically a veteran already working within the business.
Mott MacDonald is a global engineering, management and development consultancy that helps deliver and maintain the infrastructure vital to everyday life. As one of the world’s largest employee-owned businesses, the company works across sectors including transport, energy, water and buildings – driving sustainable outcomes with purpose and technical excellence. Its inclusive culture and long-term thinking make it a strong fit for members of the Armed Forces community transitioning to civilian careers.
Mott MacDonald began formally collecting Armed Forces community data during the onboarding process in 2023 and currently records around 100 veterans in its 8,500-strong UK workforce. The company also asks applicants at the point of application whether they are veterans, ensuring early visibility and tailored support. A key part of Mott MacDonald’s approach is to normalise and elevate Armed Forces experience across all levels of recruitment and internal reporting. Recruitment messaging includes explicit welcome statements in every job description aimed at veterans and their families. In addition, a full-time Programme Manager is in place to lead military engagement and ensure consistent support throughout the hiring pipeline. For those unsure about a permanent move, the company also offers six-week internships in live, billable roles, with a strong expectation that these can convert to permanent employment if mutually agreeable. This initiative helps veterans assess role fit while gaining relevant commercial experience.
