The Lloyd’s Ex-Military Placement Scheme

The Lloyd’s ex-military placement scheme provides veterans with the opportunity to undertake a work placement within the world’s most advanced insurance market. The scheme is designed with two core objectives. Firstly, it aims to bridge the knowledge and experience gap of veterans by offering hands-on training and a potential route into employment within firms actively seeking new talent.

Secondly, the scheme engages directly with hiring managers across the market to promote the benefits of employing ex-military personnel, while also addressing any misconceptions or perceived limitations associated with military backgrounds. Meeting these objectives enables the programme to identify and develop tailored employment opportunities for veterans within both the London and wider insurance markets.

Benefits for Veterans

Now in its sixth year, the scheme has consistently achieved a success rate of 80–90%, with the majority of participants securing roles in the insurance industry. This success is largely attributed to the chance it gives individuals to demonstrate their transferable skills to potential employers.

The programme typically runs for eight weeks, with all participants beginning at the same time. Depending on business needs and opportunity availability, participants are either placed with a single firm for the full duration or split between two firms for four weeks each. Wherever possible, candidates are matched to placements aligned with their interests or experience – such as placing project managers in project management roles. However, given the nature of career transitions, some individuals may still be exploring their best fit within the industry. Applicants are encouraged to highlight any particular areas of interest on their application form.

Benefits for Hosting Companies

To date, more than 100 veterans have secured employment across the insurance industry through this scheme, often in roles they may not have previously been considered for. During placements, candidates consistently demonstrate the valuable qualities associated with military service – including initiative, resilience, and a strong work ethic. They typically require minimal supervision, add value from the outset, and many have successfully led or contributed to complex projects within a short timeframe.

Lloyd's have an excellent success rate in finding service leavers permanent roles in the industry, with over 100 individuals now working in the Market who have come through the scheme.
