Senior Station Technician / Station Technician

We have an exciting opportunity at Mallaig Lifeboat Station for a Station Technician or a Senior Station Technician to join the team. This would suit someone whose mechanical expertise, resilience, leadership, and management skills are just as strong as their ability to keep Mallaig Lifeboat Station in perfect operational order.

Salary range

• Senior Station Technician: £34,893 – £41,050
• Station Technician: £29,079 – £34,210

Your role

To succeed as Senior Station Technician, you’ll have an NVQ L4/SVQ L5 in an engineering discipline, a time-served engineering apprenticeship, or a sound background and experience in mechanical electrical or electronic engineering. Applicants without these qualifications or experience may be offered a Station Technician role in lieu.

In either role, most of your time will be spent ensuring that the Severn Class All-Weather Lifeboat is kept in the best possible condition. You will also ensure that the lifeboat station functions on a day-to-day basis. You will be involved in training volunteer crew members – so that when an emergency shout does occur, you, your crew, and your lifeboat will be absolutely prepared.

Your role will include:

• Inspiring and motivating your team: supporting their development, conducting shore-based training, identifying ways they can improve and imparting your valuable knowledge.
• Meeting and talking to the general public about your station’s work.
• Taking a lead on quality, safety, health, and environment issues, helping to develop a positive culture within the station.
• Spending time in the day-to-day running of the lifeboat station; this may be in the form of answering emails, ensuring records are maintained and working with the Operations Team.

About you

You will have the ability to build effective relationships with volunteers at the lifeboat station, the supporters locally and RNLI staff beyond while acting as an ambassador for the station and the RNLI within the community.

You will be someone who already holds or is willing and able to work towards the required qualifications and competencies for this role. To be considered for the role of Station Technician/Senior Station Technician at Mallaig Lifeboat Station, you will need:

• Knowledge and experience of the operation, maintenance, and repair of marine diesel engines. An engineering background and mindset is essential.
• To demonstrate leadership and management qualities and the ability to motivate and maximise people’s potential.
• The potential to be a passed out as an RNLI ALB Afloat Mechanic.
• Experience of fulfilling a Lifeboat Mechanic role or equivalent, with the capacity and willingness to develop skills in other areas of seagoing duties.
• A valid driving licence.

As this is a sea-going appointment, you will need to satisfy the Institution's medical and eyesight standards.
