A different kind of place.

A place with tailored learning built around your interests and ideas. A place to develop your passion and a place to fulfil your potential. We are York St John University and we've been changing lives through education since 1841.

  • With us it's personal. Every learning journey is different. That's why we get to know you as an individual and support you in achieving your personal goals.
  • We prepare you for the future. We are in the top 25 universities in the UK for graduate outcomes (DLHE 2017).
  • Celebrate in style. Our students have been graduating in York Minster, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, since 1989.
  • London Calling. We opened the doors to our London Campus in 2018, allowing our students to supercharge their studies.

Future ready facilities

Just a stone's throw from York city walls, our campus blends Victorian architecture with contemporary facilities to inspire, motivate and engage.

We have invested over £40 million in state-of-the-art learning rooms, studios and laboratories to ensure you have everything you need to push the boundaries of what's possible and achieve your aspirations.

Welcome to York

Our campus is located in the centre of York, a city steeped in history. York Minster, the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe, has been the centrepiece of York's skyline since 1080. York's streets are lined with a mix of independent shops and cafes, well known highstreet stores and plenty of restaurants.

The city also hosts an annual calendar of festivals that showcase local talent and the history of the region. These include the renowned Aesthetica Short Film Festival, the Great Yorkshire Fringe Comedy Festival, York Literature Festival, York Chocolate Festival and the JORVIK Viking Festival.

Simon Kumar, now a lecturer in Physical Education and Youth Sport, served in the Royal Air Force Regiment, before transitioning to civilian life in 2005 when he became a student at York St John University.

He remembers taking the plunge into full-time education: ‘After leaving the Forces I decided to study for a degree in sport at York St John University, as I had the ambition of becoming a physical educator. I came to an Open Day and remember the sense of community – I felt like the people I talked to were genuinely interested in me as a person, it wasn’t just a sales pitch. When I arrived on campus as a student, I was acutely aware that I hadn’t been in a formal learning environment for some time, and I must admit, it was daunting at first. However, the University was well equipped and understood my situation of not only being a Service leaver but also a mature student. The academic and pastoral support I received really helped my transition and enabled me to settle in and fulfil my potential. As a result of hard work in such a nurturing academic environment, I achieved a first-class Bachelor of Arts honours degree in Sports Studies.’

Celebrate your graduation here and be part of its history!
