Our partnership with the British Armed Forces allows us to offer unique work-based distance learning degrees, covering a range of subjects, for members of the Army, Royal Navy and Royal Air Force.

Flexible online learning

We understand the need to be flexible when working within the armed forces with changes to location and non-standard working hours as well as your personal commitments and responsibilities. Our online degree courses are designed to fit in around your busy schedule so that you can choose when and where you study and make the most of your down time. As long as you have a reliable internet connection you can study from anywhere in the world.

As a distance learner, you’ll study through Canvas, our world-class online Learning Management System, which can be accessed from your phone, tablet or computer, at home or on the move.

Canvas provides instant access to study materials, forums, and support from tutors and online classmates. It’s also where you’ll submit your assignments and receive feedback.

Funding support

We're an approved provider for the Ministry of Defence Learning Credit Scheme (ELCAS). You can use your ELCAS credits towards the course fees on our wide range of flexible distance learning courses. For more information please contact us.

Designed for you

ARU recognises and gives credit for your military training and depending on your current qualifications and experience you may qualify for advanced entry through Accredited Prior Learning (APL). APL takes into account any previous qualifications or courses you have completed either before or during your service. It also takes into account your rank and experience so that the skills, knowledge and experience you have developed can be taken into account. Depending on your individual circumstances APL can help you meet the course entry requirements or reduce the amount of time it takes to complete the qualification which in turn can reduce the cost of studying. Veterans & Families Institute for Military Social Research

Our Veterans & Families Institute carry out research, policy development and consultation on the impact of military service on veterans and their families.

Our academics work across disciplines including sociology, psychology, social policy, education, social work, nursing and ethics and have published reports and academic papers relating to both commissioned research and to areas of specific research interest.

We're represented on a number of national expert groups including the Confederation of Service Charities (COBSEO) cluster groups on Criminal Justice, Foreign and Commonwealth Personnel & Families and Research, as well as the NHS England Veterans Mental Health Round Table Group. We are also proud to host the Forces in Mind Research Centre and Veterans & Families Research Hub.
