With over 40 years of industry experience, The Underwater Centre is a subsea training school that provides internationally-recognised Commercial Diving and Remotely Operated Vehicle training to personnel looking to start an exciting new career.

Located on the banks of Loch Linnhe, a tidal sea loch on the West Coast of Scotland, The Underwater Centre, Fort William, provides HSE accredited, industry-specific and “as close to the offshore job” commercial diver training that equips students with the necessary skills and qualifications for their new career.

The extensive operational experience gained on our range of ROV courses means that our courses fully prepare you for the role of ROV Pilot Technician; training is provided on both our vessel-based Work Class and Observation Class ROVs, as well as in our practical mechanical and electrical workshops

Commercial Diving – Premium Industry Package

Maximise your employment opportunities with the ultimate air diving career package. This 13-week course gives you the essential HSE Commercial Diving qualifications to work inshore and offshore, including subsea tools training throughout, vital skills such as welding and burning, rigging and underwater inspection. Important skills that will help provide you with the experience to get the job done.

As well as hands-on experience you’ll also receive IMCA Diver Medic or ALST training, dive using Enriched Air Nitrox and practical training in Subsea Bolt Tensioning (available for a limited time).

Choosing the Premium Industry Package will make you the ideal multi-skilled employee as you will gain valuable skills whilst diving on multiple industry-specific jobs; all carried out within our on-site facilities training on the tools and procedures that you’ll need to know when working as a commercial diver.

Commercial Diving – Construction Career Package

Our 11-week Construction Career Package provides you with the essential HSE Commercial Diver qualifications, as well as underwater and surface tools training developed following industry feedback from diving contractors; providing training and experience on the skills and knowledge required from you in your new career as a commercial diver.

The Construction Career Package will equip you with required diving competencies and core underwater skills training in welding, burning, rigging and slinging and Bolt Tensioning.

Commercial Diving – HSE Surface Supplied Top Up

This 1 week advanced air diving qualification is suitable for divers who already hold a surface supplied certification and want to gain the qualification to work offshore. You will complete a number of practical dives; learn safety procedures and techniques including the use of a wet bell and hot wat suit.

The HSE Surface Supplied Top Up course will provide you with the HSE Surface Supplied Top Up certificate that will enable you to dive offshore.

Remotely Operated Vehicle – Premium ROV

Our 7-week Premium ROV course covers a comprehensive range of technical and operational training providing you with the best introduction to the demands of the ROV industry.

This course combines ROV piloting skills with Electronics, High Voltage and Electrical Safety, Work Class and Observation Class ROV Training, Fibre Optics, Working at Height and experience using our VMX Triton XL Simulator for offshore scenario-based training.

As well as ROV operational skills you’ll also gain the practical electronics skills and qualifications you’ll need to kick-start your new ROV career. 

On successful completion of the course, you will obtain an SQA Customised Award in ROV Subsea Support Skills (SCQF equivalent to Level 6 and Level 7) covering the following modules:

Level 6:

  • SQA Electrical Fundamentals
  • SQA Electrical Installation: An Introduction to Industrial Electronics
  • SQA Electrical Installation in Hazardous Conditions & Special Locations
  • SQA Engineering Systems: Pneumatics & Hydraulics
  • SQA ROV Piloting Skills

Level 7:

  • SQA Introduction to Electronic Test Equipment & Measurement
  • SQA Fault Diagnosis on Basic Electronic Circuits

You will also gain the following internal certificates:

  • Working at Height
  • High Voltage and Electrical Safety
  • Titan 4 Manipulator
  • Fibre Optics – Systems, Integration and Testing

Remotely Operated Vehicle – ROV Pilot Technician

Our 3-week ROV Pilot Technician course provides an intensive learning experience to those that already have evidence of a strong grounding in electronics, engineering or hydraulics. This course takes your technical expertise and demonstrates how you can apply it to a range of ROV systems – such as those you’ll find when working as a ROV Pilot Technician.

Throughout this course you’ll learn to pilot an ROV in offshore conditions as well as using a Launch and Recovery System, Tether Management, Search and Recovery using the ROV system and manipulator arm, Sonar Mapping and practical flying scenarios.

 As well as all of the above, you’ll also gain operational experience on-board our dedicated ROV vessel, fully-mobilised Work Class ROV and use of our advanced simulator.

  • SQA Engineering Systems: Pneumatics & Hydraulics – Higher National
