The Defence Studies Department is at the heart of security and defence education in the United Kingdom.

The Defence Studies Department is part of the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy.

Throughout the world, societies and economies are transforming. Its job is to understand these changes, and make a positive contribution to human welfare, security and sustainability. Also to create impact by giving students the confidence and skills to critically engage with and shape change through research. 

  • The Department was created specifically to focus on its Military Partnership, which specialises in bespoke research-led educational solutions for the military and wider national security professions, utilising academic and organisational expertise and capability. Its research directly informs academic and policy debates in the UK and internationally. 
  • As one of the largest UK University faculties focusing on policy-orientated research, the Faculty of Social Science & Public Policy is committed to advancing social science. 
  • The Faculty takes an international approach to advancing social science scholarship.
  • The world-leading expertise across the social sciences, teaching and research community includes politicians, business leaders, policy-makers, activists and teachers in London, the UK, Europe and internationally, whilst students come from over 125 countries.

International Affairs MA
International Affairs is a ground-breaking new programme that combines international relations, military history, strategic studies and regional security studies to educate students in the fundamental issues surrounding international security and conflict politics. With modules covering international relations, strategy and conflict history, cyber security, intelligence, and future conflict, the course’s multidisciplinary approach enables you to gain a holistic understanding of the global security industry and the challenges it faces.
