Geospatial Specialist - Submarine Operations and Support (SOS)
A unique opportunity for a Geospatial Specialist to benefit from working in a highly dynamic, operationally focussed area in support of some of the UK’s most important and strategic defence operations. Building a high level of direct engagement with Royal Navy end users this role offers a real window into a world that few outside serving armed forces personnel ever get to see.
UKHO is an executive agency, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence. We work with a wide range of data partners to chart the world's oceans in order to develop and serve world leading software and data solutions to commercial shipping companies, navies and maritime organisations. Our products ensure safe navigation and global trade efficiency and support other marine activities including economic development, environmental protection, resource exploration and utilisation, scientific research and security and defence.
About Submarine Operations and Support (SOS)
The MOD requires a range of specialist products and services to support submarine deployments and activities. The Submarine Operations and Support (SOS) team is responsible for meeting this requirement.
The SOS team is made up of Geospatial Specialists of varying levels of expertise, who curate and deliver services and products for defence customers. This, in short, means presenting information in a format that enables defence customers to make operational, navigational and situational awareness decisions. These customers rely on the products SOS develop in the very real maritime defence domain.
SOS Geospatial Specialists contribute to the production of specialist analogue and digital geospatial products and analyse data collected from submarine operations. Using your geospatial technical expertise, you will analyse and manage data to identify causes of operational issues and to meet the defined output, deadlines, cost, quality, and security criteria required by the MOD for ongoing product enhancements. Post holders maintain close contact with the Royal Navy customer to ensure the products and services provided effectively meet the requirement.
New team members will be mentored by more experienced team members as they learn the role and will rotate through data analysis and production tasks in order to become competent in multiple roles and thus better support the often ad-hoc nature of the work of the SOS Team.
What we are looking for
We are seeking motivated geospatial specialists who are passionate about delivering geospatial products and services to solve real world problems for their customers. You will be a team player who has a genuine desire to work collaboratively as part of a small, dynamic team. Self-motivation and the ability to deliver at pace is also important. Being reactive to customer needs is a key aspect of the role.
