Cyber Security Training

Cyber security is a sector that offers a world of opportunity for ex-military jobseekers says Brigadier (Retired) Andrew Jackson, managing director, SaluteMyJob

What’s your reaction to talk about cyber security? Something like ‘What is cyber? It’s all too technical. It’s for IT types, not for me’? Well, you’re wrong – yes there are some very techie roles in the sector, but there are many more that your military security training and experience will suit very well.

You will obviously have a much better chance of getting a job if the employer is struggling to find good people to fill roles. There is a huge shortage of quality talent – estimated to increase to 1.8 million globally within five years – with the right hard and soft skills and experience to fill cyber-related jobs. What’s more, employers are paying more for people who are available, which improves both your career and pay prospects.

Cyber security – better called information security – is one of the easiest sectors to which to transfer your military knowledge, skills and experience. You have been trained to analyse the threat, create and communicate a plan, conduct operations, measure or monitor their success and learn lessons from hard-won experience. So, chances are you have the skills you need to fill key roles, such as:

  • security operations centre analyst or incident manager
  • threat analyst
  • security consultant
  • security officer or information assurance manager.

Many ex-military job seekers follow a well-worn path into physical security roles, without realising there are more and better-paid jobs in information security. SaluteMyJob, in partnership with IBM and the Corsham Institute, has trained – free of charge – more than 250 transitioning and former Service men and women on three- and five-day courses at Corsham to help them realign their military skills for cyber jobs. Similarly, the Crucial Academy offers three-week-long courses at its centre in Brighton.

There are more jobs with better pay that are probably easier to get than you think. So why not get in touch or apply for one of our courses to find out more?
