Train to Teach in 2 years Service men and women often have the technical skills and personal qualities required to teach. At Newport we offer a unique opportunity to gain a degree and qualify as a secondary school teacher in just two years. Our courses have been extremely popular with a wide range of participants from varied backgrounds and professions seeking new career opportunities.
There are five subject options. These are:
· Mathematics with science or ICT
· Science with mathematics or ICT
· Design & Technology
These subjects have been designated by the Government as priority subjects so employment prospects and career progression are good.
Taster Days These take place twice a year, normally in November and March. We would welcome applications to these free events from service men and women who would like to find out more about teacher training at Newport. The day includes a minimum of 4 hours in a local secondary school observing lessons and talking to both senior and newly qualified teachers. For more information go to

Entry Requirements Candidates will be required to have successfully completed one year of higher education or equivalent. For example, this may include one year of a degree, a HNC or HND, professional or vocational qualifications. This academic entry requirement can be met through successful completion of the Certificate of Higher Education Introduction to Secondary Teaching course also offered at Newport.
In addition, GCSE grade C in mathematics and English are required although suitable candidates who do not have these qualifications may take a university equivalence test.

Course Structure Full-time based at University of Wales, Newport. 24 weeks will be spent on practical school based experience in local partnership secondary schools. Throughout your course you will be supported by academic tutors and school mentors. Newport was awarded top marks for their support and guidance of trainee teachers during their last Estyn inspection in 2005 (
