Job Description:
CLERKS TO HM JUDGESStarting salary £21,467 (from 1.8.08) per annum plus benefits
Have you ever wondered how a case gets to court or why a Judge has a seemingly endless capacity to assimilate information?
If, like many, you have, this is the perfect opportunity to learn how the judicial system works and be an integral part of this highly interesting profession. As Clerk to one of HM Judges, you will use your exceptional organisational skills to effectively manage all aspects of your assigned Judge’s day. This will involve a wide variety of tasks from secretarial support and diary management to liaising with senior interested parties.
HM Judges are based at the Royal Courts of Justice in the Strand so ideally you should live within easy commuting distance of these Courts. However, HM Judges can preside over trials anywhere in England and Wales therefore you can expect to travel outside of London for a number of weeks each year when you will be required to stay in lodgings, usually returning home at weekends. During this time you will continue to provide a first class service to your Judge and be responsible for organising all aspects of the trip.
Good word processing skills and the ability to type accurately at speed (typing accuracy will be tested prior to being offered an interview) must be combined with a flexible, proactive approach and the confidence to make decisions on your own initiative, often under pressure. Previous senior level PA experience, knowledge of court procedures and a clean driving licence would be highly desirable. All successful candidates will be security cleared before a post is offered.
In return for your loyalty, discretion and reliability these posts offer ongoing training and development, generous annual leave, pension scheme, interest -free season ticket loan and a privileged position at the heart of the legal profession.
