The College of Law
Many people think you need a law degree to become a lawyer, but you don’t. Any graduate can take the first step to becoming a lawyer, by completing a one-year law conversion course: the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). The College of Law is the UK’s largest provider of postgraduate legal education, and offers the GDL, promising ‘a highly focused, innovative and flexible approach’ at its centres in London, Guildford, Birmingham, York and Chester.
Full-time study may not always be an option for its students, so it offers a range of part-time learning options for the GDL, allowing them to fit study around other commitments. Part-time options have exactly the same standards as the full-time course, but the content is studied over two years, providing flexibility to meet other responsibilities.
After the GDL, students need to enrol on the next stage of their legal training – the Legal Practice Course (LPC) (for solicitors) or the Bar Vocational Course (BVC) (to become a barrister). Both are available at the College of Law, with full-time or flexible part-time options, and an LL.B law degree is the prize for successful completion of both GDL and LPC or BVC.
The College also has a large and well-resourced careers service in legal education to help its graduates find their start in the profession.
