First choice for first aid training
Nuco Training is the UK’s leading independent company in first aid training – a specialist in ‘training the trainer’, delivering high-quality, industry-standard First Aid Instructor and Defibrillation Instructor courses throughout the UK.
First aid in the workplace continues to be an important responsibility for businesses, and is a legal requirement for most UK companies and organisations. This means that there is a continuing strong demand for HSE (Health & Safety Executive) first aid instructors and training professionals throughout UK commerce and industry, with consequent opportunities for employment as an instructor for the Service leaver.
If you are interested in becoming a part of this fast-developing industry, then Nuco’s five-day First Aid Instructor course is recommended as a recognised level 3 qualification – including PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector). This means that, in addition to obtaining the stand-alone PTLLS Professional Training Qualification, the newly qualified trainer would also be equipped to teach the full range of HSE-approved first aid courses.
Funding for military personnel
Nuco Training is now in its tenth year as a CTP Preferred Supplier – helping and assisting those military personnel who are in the process of resettlement and making that all important transition from a military to a civilian working environment. In addition, Nuco is approved by the MoD in support of the enhanced learning credit (ELC) scheme (Provider No. 1349).
Nuco delivers its fundable five-day courses at various high-quality venues throughout the UK – usually about three or four courses per month – including the level 4 Advanced Certificate in Health & Safety. Visit the nucotraining.com website to see the current schedule of all instructor courses: www.nucotraining.com .

Premier launches a new military resettlement programme in Milton Keynes
Premier has expanded its bespoke armed forces resettlement packages at its training venue in the National Badminton Centre, Milton Keynes; aimed at delivering health and fitness qualifications to service leavers. Available from September, the comprehensive packages include course tuition and exam fees, all course material, on-site accommodation and food, as well as career guidance and support.
Having trained in excess of 2000 service personnel and with a dedicated Armed Forces Education Career Advisor and resettlement department, Premier Training International is offering service leavers a choice of qualifications, ranging from the Level 2 Certificate in Gym Instruction through to the Internationally recognised Diploma in Advanced Personal Training and Certificate in Sports Massage Therapy. A range of additional CPD courses for fitness and sports professionals are also available.
Regional Manager for Premier Training International, Darren Slater said: "We’re delighted to be launching dedicated military resettlement packages at our Milton Keynes venue and have already had a lot of interest in the various courses. Premier Training is a preferred supplier to the Career Transition Partnership (CTP) and Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) funding scheme. We are experienced at dealing with the service leavers requirements and our resettlement packages are extremely popular with the majority of our students coming via referrals from previous graduates.
As the training is delivered from a commercial health club, it helps to make the service leaver’s transition to working in this environment much easier; so whatever their career ambition, they can go on and build a successful career in the health and fitness industry."

Counselling in the workplace – the way forward
We have all seen rises in stress levels at work for one reason or another; you could be facing the threat of redundancy or issues with another member of staff. However, employers are now starting to solve these problems by providing staff with counselling sessions – and the effects are amazing.
Members of staff recently took the time to complete a survey regarding employee assistance programmes (EAPs). The results were very encouraging with 52% of employees suggesting that, had they not received counselling, they would have had to take time off work.
The findings did not stop there. Many employees went on to say that the counselling sessions had a positive effect on both their personal lives and their relationships with their colleagues.
Andrea Waller, an industry expert, explains that there is a need for counselling to help maintain a healthy workforce: ‘All the wider evidence shows that mental health issues are on the rise. Anxiety and depression can have a serious effect on all areas of a person’s life, including their work.’
The results also showed a significant rise in employee satisfaction with their personal lives. Prior to counselling sessions, only 9% stated they were satisfied, but after counselling this figure rose to a staggering 57%.
You could use your own life experience to count towards training to be a counsellor, and start to help people who are in need. Chrysalis is the UK’s largest therapy trainer and registered ELCAS training provider, and will be able to help you start your journey to a new career today.

Army doctors row for heroes
At the start of July, two Army doctors finished a record-breaking row around Great Britain, having spent 50 days at sea covering 2,100 miles. Captains Hamish Reid and Nick Dennison of the Royal Army Medical Corps set off in mid-May, in their 24-foot ocean-going rowing boat Komale, aiming to become the first pair to row non-stop and unsupported around the British mainland. Having battled high seas, fierce winds and strong tides on their journey, they crossed the finish line in the Solent on 1 July, to be greeted by family members and friends on a flotilla of boats, which escorted them back to dry land after 50 days at sea.
They rowed up to 20 hours a day, with their sleep patterns dependent on the weather conditions. Maintaining good physical condition made the nutritional demands of the row very important and it is estimated they each expended 8,000 calories per day, which they had to cater for in their diet. During the journey, they carried out scientific research into these calorific demands, which will provide new insight into the nutritional requirements of physical degradation and prolonged exertion – an increasingly important component of current operations in Afghanistan.
In setting their world record, Hamish and Nick aimed to raise £20,000 for the Army Benevolent Fund, Help for Heroes and Toe in the Water (competitive sailing for injured Servicemen).
