Train2Train’s international reputation grows

Train2Train, the UK’s leading provider of compliance training instructor courses is establishing a significant international presence. It is now delivering instructor courses in the Middle East from its Dubai Healthcare Centre building. These courses have been successful in attracting numerous delegates from across the region. Delivering the International First Aid Instructor Course is Train2Train Operations Director and former WO2 Royal Signals John Morley.

Excited about the continued expansion of Train2Train, John says: ‘Train2Train instructor programmes are proving to be extremely popular and our reputation for delivering high-quality courses that allow delegates to attain formal teaching and subject matter qualifications is quickly spreading beyond the UK.’

The most popular course is proving to be the Compliance Training Instructor course; upon successful completion, delegates are able to deliver 13 QCF and HSE qualifications covering first aid, food safety, health and safety, fire safety and manual handling. As well as gaining subject-specific qualifications, delegates also gain their PTLLS award at either level 3 or 4. As part of this fantastic course, delegates are provided with all of the resources to deliver qualifications of their own and are also enrolled with Highfield Awarding Body for Compliance (HABC) in order to formally certificate their learners.

CRS awarded Preferred Supplier Status within the CTP

Service leavers of all ranks, from the Royal Navy, Army, Royal Air Force and Royal Marines, will all benefit from CRS’s resettlement support, career transition advice and training opportunities. Its Preferred Supplier Status is highly sought after as it is recognition that, as an effective supplier of health, safety and environmental training, our accredited courses are approved to the highest of standards and all Service leavers throughout the UK and the world seeking a new career can be assured that they are in safe hands.

Charles Ford, CRS’s Business Development and Marketing Director, states: ‘I am thrilled with the news of the approval as it is a vindication of CRS providing quality training and education to a wide range of companies and students at various training locations throughout the UK. It also provides CRS a platform to assist the Armed Forces with the correct unbiased career advice they need and whether a health and safety profession is the correct career route. I am very proud to have built a reputation based upon honesty, integrity and trust, where I receive many referrals as evidence of the support and guidance I have given to previous Service leavers who are now working in the health and safety industry. Distinctions are a measure of application and pre-course preparation that is within the grasp of every Service leaver who starts a training course with CRS, and one I recommend at every opportunity. I am looking forward to working closely with the CTP in being able to provide an enjoyable and rewarding learning experience where obtaining the correct qualifications will furnish the Service leaver with a better opportunity for future employment and a new career with wider horizons.’

OMS adds new qualification: Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)

Successful health and safety training company, OMS, has now launched a further qualification for its candidates going down either the ELCAS or CTP route. Having spent time talking to its delegates, OMS has found that many Service leavers are often being asked to hold a basic teaching qualification too, so that they can deliver training themselves in their future roles.

So, what is PTLLS?
PTLLS stands for ‘Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector’. It will cover full -time teachers delivering lessons in a college, and at the same time will cover trainers and assessors providing courses and underpinning knowledge for work and vocational qualifications. The intention with PTLLS is to have a ‘one size fits all’ qualification that will give all qualified teachers a substantive qualification that allows them to pass the necessary threshold to teach.

OMS’s PTLLS 7303 qualification, certified by City & Guilds, will provide candidates with an opportunity to gain accreditation from a one-unit qualification that gives them the necessary training to allow them to enter the teaching or training profession, gaining as they go a level 3 or 4 qualification and taking the first step towards the QTLS (Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills) qualification.

Is PTLLS for you?
Your own intentions in choosing teaching as a career are fundamental to which qualification you should seek to achieve. If your hope is to teach school-age children in an everyday school setting, the PTLLS qualification is not immediately relevant for your purposes. The PTLLS is more targeted towards those who wish to deliver vocational and/or specialised learning for the purposes of improving a learner’s employability. Teacher training is an option taken on by many candidates directly after they themselves have gained a further education qualification such as a bachelors or master’s degree in their sphere of speciality.

A PTLLS qualification is generally achieved at the end of 30 classroom and 30 non-classroom learning hours, and will, if followed correctly, teach the candidate to develop an awareness of their own professional role, the value systems underpinning that role and the legal requirements for carrying it out. As much as knowledge of the subject you are teaching, the profession requires you to have an appreciation of the principles of learning, teaching and assessment of the success of the learner.

What jobs could this lead to?
Achieving this qualification could help you to get started as an educator in the lifelong learning sector. Possible jobs include:
  • teaching assistant or learning support assistant
  • training instructor
  • training manager.
After taking the Award, OMS can also offer you the opportunity to progress to other qualifications that will help you achieve Associate Teacher, Learning and Skills (ATLS) status or Qualified Teacher, Learning and Skills (QTLS) status. These are:
  • Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTTLS) – this qualification is for those who would like to become Associate Teachers
  • Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTTLS) – for those who would like to work as a full teacher, including anyone teaching literacy, numeracy or ESOL.

What does it involve?
Someone who is looking to gain a PTLLS qualification will be required to demonstrate a range of competencies that stretch from the fairly straightforward, such as ‘basic theory of education’ and ‘job roles and responsibilities’, to more specific and involved modules such as keeping a reflective teaching journal and giving a ‘micro teaching session’. All of these elements will be assessed by an internal verifier who will judge to which level the candidate has satisfied each of them. In order to get on the course in the first place it will also be necessary to demonstrate a sufficient level of literacy and be qualified in the subject you wish to teach. It is unnecessary to have taught before. The idea of the assessment process is to decide whether or not you have the competency to teach.

Who are OMS?
This training is offered by OMS, an excellent training provider, which already has a wealth of experience in training ELCAS, Service leavers, is an advisor on the Board of the British Forces Resettlement Service and a preferred supplier to the CTP. OMS is one of the most trusted and valued organisations delivering training to Forces leavers at this present time.

If this is something you feel you might be interested in pursuing, either as a stand-alone course or added to one of its other ELCAS and CTP packages, it is worth making contact with OMS, to find out more information and how this might suit you. OMS can be contacted by email at info@oms.uk.com  or by calling 0845 1300616 for more information.

Vulcan Fire Training’s Fire Safety Manager course

As the economy contracts, the need for competent fire risk assessments still remains a mandatory duty under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which came into force in October 2006. Organisations either recruit their own Fire Safety Advisors/Managers or employ consultants to carry out fire risk assessments of their premises on a regular basis. Vulcan Fire Training will train suitable candidates from the workforce or as potential consultants on its Fire Manager course as ‘competent persons’.

The course includes working on plan drawing exercises, giving delegates experience of conducting fire risk assessments, compiling fire emergency plans, safety report writing and managing fire safety in the workplace. Successful delegates on the Fire Manager Certificate course are able to apply to join the Institute of Fire Safety Managers at Technician (TIFSM) fire qualification level.

Vulcan Fire Training runs the nine‐day course split into five‐day and four‐day modules. Course delegates work in teams using laptops and are provided with free software to enable them to function effectively and efficiently as Fire Safety Managers. Successful delegates can also go on to attend the Advanced Fire Manager Course (five days) with the potential of attaining Associate grade with the Institute (AIFSM) as part of their career progression.

For more information about this and other fire safety training contact Vulcan Fire Training, Tel: 01933 271756, visit www.vulcanfiretraining.co.uk  or email info@vulcanfiretraining.co.uk .

Train2Train: 13 good reasons to choose the Compliance Training Instructor Course

Finding a new career during the resettlement process is often a daunting time for Service personnel. Choosing an appropriate resettlement course to partake in is often a difficult decision to make. Because of this, Train2Train has created a fantastic and unique Compliance Training Instructor Course that allows delegates to teach a total of 13 HSE and QCF qualifications upon successful completion; this is the most comprehensive instructor course of its kind. The course is ideal for Service leavers who wish to deliver formal qualifications under the banner of their own company or for other organisations. Either way, it is an impressive addition to any CV presented to a prospective employer.
The 13 qualifications that can be taught upon successful completion of the course include:

  • 3-day First Aid at Work
  • level 2 Emergency First Aid at Work
  • level 2 Paediatric First Aid
  • level 2 CPR and AED
  • level 1 and level 2 Health and Safety
  • level 1 and level 2 Fire Safety
  • level 2 Moving and Handling
  • level 1 and level 2 Food Safety
  • level 3 PTLLS/ADT.

During the Compliance Training Instructor Course delegates will be given all of the resources necessary to deliver the above courses, which amount to over £1400 in value; this includes all of the required interactive PowerPoints and books. Delegates will also be afforded the opportunity to become an HABC centre in order to deliver these newly acquired skills; this is all part of the Compliance Training Instructor Course.

OMS Launches NEBOSH Certificate in Environmental Management

Leading Health and Safety training company, OMS, has recently added the NEBOSH Environmental Certificate to its portfolio of ELCAS-accredited training courses. This Environmental Certificate is offered as a stand-alone qualification, or as part of a number of packages, specially designed by OMS for Service leavers.

Environmental popularity
OMS’s decision to offer the NEBOSH Environmental is as a response to a trend in the workplace that has developed the traditional health and safety role into environmental areas.

Clive Ormerod, MD of OMS, comments: ‘As health and safety consultants, we have noticed that many of our contacts within organisations now look after environmental matters as well as health and safety. We often come across “SHE” managers or teams now, as employers begin to appreciate the environmental challenges they are facing. Our ELCAS packages have always been designed to offer Service leavers the best possible choices in civvy street and so, by adding the Environmental Certificate, we believe we are maximising their chances of finding a successful new career.’

Environmental standards are developing rapidly in the UK, with more and more regulations covering issues such as waste management, energy efficiency and pollution control. Managing environmental issues is not only a legal necessity but can result in definite improvements and cost savings if implemented successfully.

The new NEBOSH Environmental Certificate will provide its holder with the confidence to undertake an environmental role, as well as being an indicator of their competence to prospective employers.

Discounted packages
OMS now offers nine different packages, which have each been designed specifically for Service personnel, to help them maximise their number of ELCAS credits. These packages can be spread out over a period of 12 months, to suit individuals’ commitments. Packages include:
  • SHE Package – including NEBOSH General Certificate, Fire and Environmental Certificate
  • Safety Practitioner Package – including NEBOSH General Certificate, Fire and Construction Certificate.
Delegates who have visited OMS have commented on the informal atmosphere, which provides them with the opportunity to network with other Forces personnel, as well as develop a close rapport with their OMS trainer.
A recent OMS delegate, Glen Conroy WO2 (SPSI), described his OMS experience thus: ‘I am currently entering the last few years of my Army career and was looking for an H&S course provider. I searched the ELCAS website and OMS showed on the list of course providers. I contacted them and their knowledge of the ELCAS system was thorough enough for me to make my decision. The content of the course was delivered at the right level considering the fact that we had people attending the course with both limited or vast experience of H&S matters. The environment was very relaxed, with very little or no pressure put on us by our instructor.’

OMS’s work experience offer
Following discussions with many Forces delegates, OMS has also added a further offer for delegates who complete one of its ELCAS packages. It is now offering the opportunity to gain hands-on, work experience, for up to seven weeks, as an opportunity to further enhance delegates’ CVs. Interested delegates, who have successfully completed an OMS course, can now accompany an experienced, qualified health and safety consultant and obtain invaluable practical experience.

Counselling in the workplace – the way forward

We have all seen rises in stress levels at work for one reason or another; you could be facing the threat of redundancy or issues with another member of staff. However, employers are now starting to solve these problems by providing staff with counselling sessions – and the effects are amazing.

Members of staff recently took the time to complete a survey regarding employee assistance programmes (EAPs). The results were very encouraging with 52% of employees suggesting that, had they not received counselling, they would have had to take time off work.

The findings did not stop there. Many employees went on to say that the counselling sessions had a positive effect on both their personal lives and their relationships with their colleagues.

Andrea Waller, an industry expert, explains that there is a need for counselling to help maintain a healthy workforce: ‘All the wider evidence shows that mental health issues are on the rise. Anxiety and depression can have a serious effect on all areas of a person’s life, including their work.’

The results also showed a significant rise in employee satisfaction with their personal lives. Prior to counselling sessions, only 9% stated they were satisfied, but after counselling this figure rose to a staggering 57%.
You could use your own life experience to count towards training to be a counsellor, and start to help people who are in need. Chrysalis is the UK’s largest therapy trainer and registered ELCAS training provider, and will be able to help you start your journey to a new career today.

Is a career in OSH right for you?

Health and safety expert Stephen Asbury talks about an interesting and worthwhile future in occupational safety and health …

‘During the course of my work with a construction company in the 1980s, I came across so many work-related injuries and illnesses that I decided I should do something about it. I studied for, and passed, my NEBOSH Certificate. It was then, as it is now, a gateway to a health and safety career.

‘To find out if a career in health and safety would suit you, I suggest you talk to your resettlement or career officer to get an idea of what the role entails. The discipline of a Services career is particularly helpful, as much of what health and safety includes is driven and regulated by acts, regulations, approved codes of practice and guidance notes.

‘If your research suggests you pursue this sort of career, your ideal first step is the same one I took: the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety. The course is eligible for ELC funding through an approved provider like CRS , so getting started won’t burn a hole in your pocket.

‘Once qualified, it’s important to know where to start your job hunt. My advice would be to join professional body IOSH (Institution of Occupational Safety and Health) at your earliest opportunity – ideally as you start your NEBOSH course. Everyone joins IOSH as an Affiliate; and, as your qualifications and experience grow, you’re re-categorised into Technician, Graduate and Chartered grades. You can join online, and find out more, at www.iosh.co.uk. I’d suggest you serve 18 months to two years in your first safety job, where you will be ideally placed to complete an NVQ in OSH.

‘If you have questions please contact Charles Ford, Business Development Director, who has helped many Service leavers in their new careers – you’ll find our contact details on our website: www.crsrisk.com. Good luck in your chosen career, and go and make workplaces safer – it’s very rewarding!’

Stephen Asbury, Chartered Fellow of the IOSH, is Managing Director of Corporate Risk Systems Ltd, a leading OSH training and consultancy provider. For more information, call 01283 509175 or email cmf@crsrisk.com.

First-class first aid training

Nuco Training is the UK’s leading independent company for first aid training, and, in particular, for specialised training in First Aid Instructor and Defibrillation Instructor courses. First Aid in the Workplace is a legal requirement for most UK organisations, which means that there is an ever increasing demand for HSE (Health & Safety Executive) First Aid Instructors in commerce and industry, with consequent opportunities for employment for the Service leaver.

If you are interested in becoming a first aid instructor or defibrillation instructor, then Nuco’s five-day First Aid Instructor course is now a recognised level 3 qualification – including PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector).

This means that, in addition to obtaining this ‘stand-alone’ PTLLS professional training qualification, the newly qualified trainer would also be equipped to teach the full range of HSE-approved first aid courses.

Funding for military personnel
Nuco Training is a CTP Preferred Supplier for military personnel who are in the process of resettlement and making that all-important transition from a military to a civilian working environment. In addition, Nuco is approved by the MoD in support of the Enhanced Learning Credit (ELC) scheme (provider no. 1349).

Nuco delivers its fundable five-day courses at various high-quality venues throughout the UK – usually about three or four courses per month. See the website for details: www.nucotraining.com.
In addition, Nuco Training is itself a provider of HSE first aid training, along with Defibrillation Instructor and the level 4 CIEH Advanced Health & Safety course.

OMS reunites pair after 28 years!

Having joined the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in 1981, and completed his basic and trade training, Steve Hawkins was posted to his first unit in June 1982. That unit was 14/20 King Hussars, based at Caen Barracks in Germany. It was there, as Cfn Steve Hawkins, that he first met Trooper Ian Hardbattle. After spending three years with 14/20 King Hussars, as LCpl Hawkins, he was posted back to the UK.

After 22 years’ Service, Steve then left the Army in 2004 and headed off to a life in civvy street as a fully qualified health and safety professional. Steve now works for successful health and safety organisation, OMS, as a consultant and trainer. He says: ‘Working for OMS, I have had the benefit of attending several of its safety training courses as part of my continuous professional development (CPD), and in May 2010 I attended the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction, to add to my training portfolio.’

At lunchtime on their first day, Ian and Steve knew they recognised each other and went through their Service history to identify how. When Steve mentioned his first ever unit, they realised that they had both served there 28 years ago! It was a strange experience for Steve, meeting up with Ian, who was then ‘Major Ian Hardbattle’.

Steve explained: ‘I am delighted that OMS is an ELCAS-accredited company, as we now have a steady stream of Forces personnel coming through our training courses. This has not only allowed me to meet people I have not seen for many years, but also means I can share with them the benefit of my experience and transition into the field of health and safety’.

So, how was Ian’s experience of going through resettlement and studying at OMS? He says, ‘Meeting up with Steve after all these years was great. OMS’s bespoke training facility is first-class, ensuring a relaxed, rewarding learning experience for all who attend. I found the process of booking the course to be very user-friendly, with the staff being both helpful and, crucially, knowledgeable on the administration of claiming enhanced learning credits (ELC). Most importantly, the levels of knowledge, experience and instructional ability displayed by the teaching staff was of an exemplary standard. They employed a wide variety of techniques to ensure the subject was fully explained and understood, with the proof of the pudding in my case being the Construction Certificate Distinction I received. To conclude: in my experience OMS provided a well put together package that fully suited my needs as a Forces leaver.’

NEBOSH launches Certificate in the Management of Health and Well-being at Work

Over 175 million working days are lost due to sickness absence each year in Britain. And absence through ill-health is not the only issue: ‘presenteeism’ – where employees continue to work despite illness – can be even more costly in terms of lost productivity. With this in mind, a new management qualification has been launched to help tackle the UK’s ‘biggest productivity problem’ – the health and well-being of its workforce.

The Certificate in the Management of Health and Well-being at Work qualification from NEBOSH is the first of its kind, designed to give managers from all types of organisation the skills and know-how to promote a healthier workplace. ‘There is a very strong business case for tackling ill-health at work,’ says Teresa Budworth, chief executive at NEBOSH, ‘but often managers are unsure about how to deal with the problem. Our new course will give HR managers, line managers and supervisors the skills they need, as well as a recognised qualification.’

More information about the qualification can be found at www.neboshhealthandwellbeing.org.uk. To find out more about a career in health and safety, turn to our feature on page 36.

People are the most important and valuable asset of any organisation and as such their training and development is vital. Training is essential to give people the necessary skills and competence, as well as improve motivation, and can also lead to a new career.

Based in Hartford, Cambridgeshire, West Anglia Training Association Ltd (Wata) offers an extensive portfolio of training and services which include health, safety, and environmental management, skill training (both electrical and mechanical), and leadership and management courses. Wata also trains and assesses young people involved in apprenticeships.

Wata is an approved learning provider under the Armed Forces Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC) scheme. The ELC scheme provides financial assistance to Service personnel who wish to undertake a training course at level 3 or above on the National Qualifications Framework or level 6 on the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework. Many of the courses, which Wata provides, are ELC accredited.

Wata has recently opened its second new training building in five years. The ‘Refectory’ was officially opened last year and has taken Wata’s training facilities to a new level.

Wata training can be delivered at its superb training centre, which provides a relaxed learning environment in a rural setting. Alternatively the training can be provided at the customer’s premises. Wata’s business is training and, as such, it has the expertise and commitment to make a difference to the learning experience of its customers. In the current climate it is increasingly important for organisations and individuals to select the best training provider. Wata has over 30 years’ experience of providing quality training. It can be contacted on 01480 435544 or at www.wata.co.uk

NEBOSH courses with excellent pass rates and ex-Forces trainers

For Service leavers who are looking for a new career in civilian life, health and safety has become a very popular option. Whether this is because of the overlap in skills between the Forces and a structured profession such as health and safety, or simply the emphasis on protecting and safeguarding others, OMS has had a steady stream of Forces delegates looking to gain NEBOSH qualifications to support their career transition.

The NEBOSH General Certificate is not only an internationally recognised qualification, but has become a mandatory requirement for anybody looking to move into the safety profession. OMS has consistently achieved higher than the national average pass rates in all of its NEBOSH courses and many of its delegates have gone on to further study and successful careers in health and safety.

Carl, a repeat delegate on our NEBOSH courses, explains: ‘I first attended the NEBOSH NGC with OMS in 2008, when I was medically discharged from the Royal Marines after ten years’ service. I have since taken NEBOSH Construction with OMS as well, and was delighted to get a distinction in that at the end of last year. These qualifications have helped me obtain a new career and get my life back on track.’

Many OMS trainers are ex-Forces themselves and have been through the same transition, so they understand the challenges faced and can speak a similar language.

First-class first aid training

Nuco Training is the UK’s leading independent company in first aid training – and, in particular, for specialised training in First Aid Instructor and Defibrillation Instructor courses. First aid in the workplace is a legal requirement for most UK organisations, which means that there is an ever increasing demand for HSE (Health & Safety Executive) first aid instructors in commerce and industry, with consequent opportunities for employment for the Service leaver.

If you are interested in becoming a first aid instructor or a defibrillation instructor then Nuco’s five-day First Aid Instructor course is now a recognised level 3 qualification – including PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector). This means that, in addition to obtaining this ‘stand alone’ PTLLS Professional Training Qualification, the newly qualified trainer will also be equipped to teach the full range of HSE-approved first aid courses.

Funding for military personnel
Nuco is a CTP Preferred Supplier for military personnel who are in the process of resettlement and making that all-important transition from a military to a civilian working environment. Nuco is also approved by the MoD in support of the Enhanced Learning Credit (ELC) scheme (provider no. 1349).

Nuco delivers its fundable five-day courses at various high-quality venues throughout the UK – usually about three or four courses per month (see website for details).
In addition, Nuco Training is a provider of HSE first aid training itself, along with the Defibrillation Instructor and level 4 CIEH Advanced Health & Safety courses.
