HR / Recruitment - Case Studies

Name: Warren Rodgers
Rank on Exit: WO2
Years of Service: 22 Years
Qualifications Gained: ECDL, an IAM Diploma, ILM Cert, principles of project management

WO2 Warren Rodgers left the Royal Logistic Corps in August 2008 on completion of his 22-year contract, and having specialised as a driver. His time in uniform has, he says, left him well versed in ‘managerial responsibility, budget management, working to timescales/deadlines, instruction (course design), disciplinaries, grievances, appraisals and inductions’.

Civilian qualifications gained while serving included the ECDL, an IAM Diploma, ILM Cert, principles of project management, defence acquisition, and driving licence categories A, C+E and D+E, while during his resettlement phase he undertook the Certificate of Personnel Practise (CPP). This course, he says, ‘paved the way for my HR career’.

‘My first job on leaving the Forces,’ he continues, ‘was working for my current employer – a practising HR & H&S consultancy. I had decided while serving that my strengths were in project management and HR. I opted for the HR career over project management as I thought HR offered far more in terms of job security (project management work at the time was contract work in the main).’

Having worked as an HR consultant for almost three years, he has experienced many facets of this sector: ‘I am accountable for 25 organisations, some multi-site, reporting directly to CEOs, directors and senior management across an array of sectors. I conduct regular site visits nationally, with the largest company consisting of over 1,200 employees. I advise management on all aspects of employee engagement, employee voice and employment relations, and am responsible for the development and introduction of employment contracts, company handbooks, performance management systems, induction programmes and management development workshops. I conduct annual reviews of each system for best practice and legislative compliance, and implement change and project management skills to achieve the best results. I am responsible for reviewing the training and development needs of line managers, then delivering a bespoke product that aligns their needs to meet organisational objectives. I promote best practice and compliance with employment law when dealing with “live cases” or employee relation issues, producing the necessary correspondence to meet management needs. I present objectives and threats in specific markets at monthly briefings to senior managers, junior managers and staff, and effectively manage projects including site closures, redundancies, restructures and TUPE management. Finally, I provide a telephone helpline/email service for managers, ensuring employment law compliancy.

‘I have enjoyed learning a new trade and like having a positive impact when delivering a service to the companies I support. And, although the pay is not as good as my Forces salary, I get to see my family on a regular basis and the quality of life is far better.’
