ChipsAway franchisees support Help for Heroes

Leading minor automotive paintwork repairer ChipsAway has launched a year- long fundraising campaign in aid of Help for Heroes, its adopted charity for 2010, to mark the company’s 15th successful year in the UK. The campaign, which will involve a series of events held nationwide, is expected to raise tens of thousands of pounds for the charity and has the enthusiastic support of Vicki Butler-Henderson, popular presenter of TV show Fifth Gear and the newly unveiled ‘face of ChipsAway’ for 2010.

‘We are encouraging all our franchisees to get involved,’ explains Lloyd Evans, chief executive of ChipsAway. ‘There will be exciting prizes on offer throughout the year for those franchisees with the most creative and crazy fundraising ideas, as well as for the top fundraisers. The ultimate prize at the end of the fundraising year will be a date with Vicki, who is a terrific sport and a great supporter of this most deserving charity.’

So far, franchisees’ ideas for fundraising include wearing wellies full of jelly for the day, soaking in a bath of baked beans and a sponsored waxing! Others will be doing sponsored runs, bike rides, the Three Peaks Challenge and charity fashion shows. The first prize up for grabs for fundraiser franchisees is a parachute jump with the famous Red Devils.

Recognising excellence in franchise professionals

The British Franchise Association (bfa) has launched its first industry-recognised qualification for franchise professionals, aimed at acknowledging expertise in franchising. The QFP (Qualified Franchise Professional) is designed to be a formal recognition of an individual’s professional knowledge and experience in franchising. It demonstrates an understanding of the intricacies of best practice franchising, as well as an investment in further and continuous development.

Tom Endean, marketing manager at the bfa, explains: ‘The bfa is set to raise the bar by not only promoting improved practices and standards, but encouraging franchisors and advisers in the industry to extended their learning and ultimately prove their existing good business practice via the form of an industry qualification.’

Once qualified, QFP status will allow the franchisor to prove their industry expertise to prospective franchisees, clients, fellow franchisors, and even new and existing staff. ‘The industry will benefit hugely from this qualification,’ says Endean, ‘enabling individuals that have already chosen to work in an ethical manner to demonstrate this more easily to potential clients and members of the public. With the recent tough economic climate causing many people to think about entering into the franchise world, this qualification will give an added reassurance that the brand they are buying in to, or the advice they are getting, is in line with the highest possible industry standards.’

Razzamataz Theatre Schools celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2010

The golden decade is upon Razzamataz Theatre Schools, as it celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2010. Founder and director Denise Gosney says that there are several special events planned to mark the anniversary: ‘We are holding a number of important events for our 10th anniversary, one of which is a series of Franchise Discovery Days,’ says Denise. ‘We will be conducting a series of roadshows that will be held throughout the country. They will offer an opportunity to meet me, learn from ‘the Dragon’, meet franchisees and find out all about the business.’ There will also be a special celebration at Her Majesty’s Theatre on 28 November; it is hoped that Duncan Bannatyne will attend (after Razzamataz appeared on Dragon’s Den) and that the BBC will film a followup documentary.

New franchisees can take advantage of a special offer with regard to paying for the franchise. ‘We are offering a finance agreement as a special deal,’ explains Denise. ‘Because it is getting harder to approach the banks in these times of recession, we will offer to finance the business, which can then be paid back in instalments.’

With an even higher profile, Razzamataz provides excellent opportunities. From the outset, franchisees will learn everything required for the business at the weeklong training course. Consultants will tutor franchisees on all aspects of the business, including CRB checks, health and safety, PR and marketing, accounts and bookkeeping and current legislation. Support is also available from Denise, head office and regional support teams.

Denise (a franchisee herself) says that 2009 was a strong year, with plenty of business. ‘The franchise is certainly well established in my area. And I think that’s because the last thing that parents want is to give up their children’s activities rather than their own. The advantage of Razzamataz is that it is the cheaper alternative to its leading competitor. We were voted in the top five stage schools for quality and affordability, in the Stage newspaper.’ One of the most successful Razzamataz Theatre Schools franchisees has an exNaval background. The discipline that comes from the Armed Forces matches and fits the culture of Razzamataz Theatre Schools, which allows you to run your franchise successfully. And with great optimism for 2010, the Razzamataz Theatre Schools success story is set to continue …

Thinking about a clean start?

New City Contract Cleaning, (see advertisement on page 54) the Telfordbased commercial cleaning firm, was launched in November 2000 by two ambitious and entrepreneurial women with their sights set firmly on the future. As their business developed, the demand from existing clients began to take them further and further from their ‘home’ territory in Shropshire, and so franchising became the next logical choice to expand the business.

Franchising a successful business model gives budding entrepreneurs a way to get their own business up and running, but without many of the risks inherent in starting an entirely new business from scratch, something New City’s Managing Director Caroline Meredith knows only too much about. Having been awarded the Shell Livewire Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award and the Prince’s Trust Business of the Year Award, she fully understands the challenges faced by any new business owner.

‘Starting out with a new concept, in a new market, is an extraordinarily difficult thing to do; you need to become an expert in marketing, sales, finance and accounting before you even begin delivering a service or a product. However, by buying into a proven franchise system all of those worries are taken away; you let the franchisor train you in the system, and by following that system you can become your own boss and concentrate on building up your own profitable business, but with much of the stress removed.’

ReactFast’s commandos find the key

Two former Royal Marine commandos, Jamie Falconer and Matt Gregg recently re-trained with ReactFast and are now running their own Milton Keynes-based locksmith business. Friends from school days, the pair gained experience of security and engineering during seven years in uniform, some of it spent in Iraq and Afghanistan. They subsequently opened their own bodyguard business in Iraq protecting US engineers working in Baghdad.

Falconer said that he and Gregg had joined the company because of ‘its reputation for being a cut above the rest and for the constant workload it could provide.’ ReactFast has been in the maintenance business for over 15 years and offers services across the UK, for plumbing, locks, heating and drainage. In recent years the company has created an in-house training facility and has re-trained more than 1,000 individuals in plumbing, electrics and locks. Many exstudents now run their own trade-based businesses, ranging in scale from man in a van to large multi-van operations. They also offer new trainees training in sales, marketing and business management.
