Vulcan Fire Training’s Fire Safety Manager course

As the economy contracts, the need for competent fire risk assessments still remains a mandatory duty under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, which came into force in October 2006. Organisations either recruit their own Fire Safety Advisors/Managers or employ consultants to carry out fire risk assessments of their premises on a regular basis. Vulcan Fire Training will train suitable candidates from the workforce or as potential consultants on its Fire Manager course as ‘competent persons’.

The course includes working on plan drawing exercises, giving delegates experience of conducting fire risk assessments, compiling fire emergency plans, safety report writing and managing fire safety in the workplace. Successful delegates on the Fire Manager Certificate course are able to apply to join the Institute of Fire Safety Managers at Technician (TIFSM) fire qualification level.

Vulcan Fire Training runs the nine‐day course split into five‐day and four‐day modules. Course delegates work in teams using laptops and are provided with free software to enable them to function effectively and efficiently as Fire Safety Managers. Successful delegates can also go on to attend the Advanced Fire Manager Course (five days) with the potential of attaining Associate grade with the Institute (AIFSM) as part of their career progression.

Army Officers to be fast-tracked into police?

Reports in the press have speculated that, under proposals to improve management standards in the emergency service, Army Officers could be fast-tracked into the police. It is reported that the government is ready to end the requirement for all recruits to undergo a two-year probationary period before entering the police service, with every entrant being expected to serve some time as a constable.

Soldiers, lawyers and even foreign police chiefs are being considered under proposals for a fast-track entry scheme drawn up by Tom Winsor, the former rail regulator, who has been called in by the government to advise on an the future structure of the force, and David Cameron has suggested that senior officers from abroad could be brought in to ‘turn around’ the police force. He called for ‘radical proposals’ on how fresh leadership could be brought into the police force, raising the prospect of an outsider being appointed as a chief constable. He told MPs: ‘At the moment, the police system is too closed. There is only one point of entry into the force. There are too few – and arguably too similar – candidates for the top jobs. I want to see radical proposals for how we can open up our police force and bring in fresh leadership.’

Interested in joining the Ambulance services? Make sure you get the right qualifications …

There is currently a high demand for trained ambulance personnel in the private ambulance services (PAS) as regulation by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) bites and cuts to the NHS lead to more services being privatised.

Furthermore, it is widely anticipated that section 19 of the Road Safety Act 2006 will be brought into force in October, requiring all emergency service drivers who may be required to exceed speed limits to have undergone ‘a course of training in the driving of vehicles at high speed’. The DfT is expected to mandate courses of instruction of a minimum of three weeks, with a maximum instructor-to-trainee ratio of 1:3, such as the Edexcel IHCD D1+D2 course that is compulsory for NHS ambulance drivers.

FTS Solutions is an Edexcel IHCD accredited provider of ambulance training for NHS Ambulance Trusts, PAS and individuals wishing to invest in their career potential. Derek Scott, Managing Director, says:

‘You will find shorter and therefore cheaper ambulance training out there, but it will not be recognised by the NHS, nor will it be compliant with the upcoming requirements of section 19. We would warn Service leavers to check providers’ credentials so that they don’t invest in training that later proves worthless. Our Edexcel IHCD accreditation means we can provide the clinical and driving training to equip you for work with the NHS or private sector. In fact, many of the private ambulance services that we are in contact with are winning new business and crying out for IHCD ambulance technicians. We can therefore help Service leavers find employment after completing their training.’
