Gain access to higher education with the DLC

The Distance Learning Centre (often known as the DLC) is one of the longest-standing online distance learning providers, delivering Online Access to Higher Education (HE) Diplomas in Nursing, Midwifery and Health Professions, as well as Law, Psychology, Social Science, Social Work and Teaching.

Access to HE courses are nationally recognised and designed for people who would like to study at university but who left school without the usual qualifications, such as A-levels or GCSEs. They are also useful for entering employment supporting professionals and accessing work-based training.

Hundreds of students have gained HE places through studying with the DLC because of its uniquely personal and supportive service where tutors ring students weekly and reply to emails promptly. Course fees can be paid in instalments across the course, and students can start any time and choose their own pace to study.
The DLC also has a long history of delivering courses to Armed Forces personnel and their families, including those servin
g in Iraq and Afghanistan and, in one case, posted on a submarine.
As courses are 100% distance learning, studies can continue wherever there is access to a computer. Flexible study options also mean you can take a break if, for example, a particular posting would make it impossible to study. Courses are not bound to college academic years but to the number of days of active study.

The best way to find out more is to visit the website at http://www.distancelearningcentre.com as everything you may need to know is on there.

‘After 23 years in the military the course provided by the DLC has given me the platform to go on to study in the exciting and challenging field of diagnostic radiography at the University of Cumbria. The DLC has provided me the skill set and confidence that has enabled me to embark on a completely different career path and the opportunity to fulfil my academic potential.’

The world’s leading terrorism studies course: study part-time over the internet

Terrorism is at the forefront of many people’s minds, whether they are members of the public, police, military, or other private or government organisations. Recent success in the hunting down of Al-Qaida members has seen significant progress, but terrorism is still a threat that remains far too real to our society, whether it is from domestic or international terrorist organisations or radicalised individuals.

Combating terrorism relies on many people working for numerous organisations and agencies, all collaborating towards a common aim: counteracting the threat and keeping the world a safe place. All these actors require a thorough understanding of the subject to ensure they achieve success.

The Certificate in Terrorism Studies from the eminent Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence (CSTPV) at the University of St Andrews is globally recognised for its excellence in providing this understanding, and has already had over 3,300 students enrol – representing the military, security, police forces and private sectors from all over the world, and particularly resettling military personnel including those using ELC funding for the course.

The programme consists of carefully designed modules that can be studied individually or as part of the academically accredited Certificate in Terrorism Studies, and which address a range of critical subjects:
  • Key Issues in International Terrorism
  • Terrorist Ideologies, Aims, Beliefs and Motivations
  • Terrorist Modus Operandi
  • International Policing Policy
  • Aviation Terrorism and Security
  • Maritime Terrorism and Security
  • Critical Infrastructure Protection
  • Introduction to Cyberterrorism (new for 2012 entry onwards).
The course is delivered by online e-learning, providing ease of access to content from world-leading experts at Europe’s oldest centre for the study of terrorism and political violence. With the course team including terrorism and extremism academics, researchers and practising counter-terrorism personnel at government, police and operational levels, the course delivers a balanced global education.
By studying via part-time online e-learning you choose where and when you wish to study without having to take time away from work or travel to a training or education centre. Each module is designed to be completed over four weeks, but flexibility is built in, with up to 12 months allowed to conclude study as it is appreciated that work commitments may interrupt available time.

The course is approved by the UK MoD for funding support from the ELC scheme for Armed Forces personnel and qualifies for GI Bill funding for US Military personnel.

Educational programmes in the subject will help prepare someone for a career with law enforcement agencies, private counter-terrorism and close protection companies, and other counter-terrorism units.

Willetts pledges future support for Service personnel and their families

In a speech given to the Conservative Party conference in October, Universities Minister David Willetts promised that annual scholarships will be on offer to the sons and daughters of Armed Forces personnel killed on active service – enough to cover university tuition fees and rent, as well as any extra books and equipment needed. Around 100 Service children are expected to take advantage of this offer each year, which is open to those at or near university age, who have had a parent killed on active duty for the Armed Forces since 1990.

He commented that ‘There is one group of families to whom we have a special debt: the brave men and women who have fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. We promised in opposition that the children of Servicemen and women killed in the last 20 years on active duty should have access to education scholarships. That is one small way of recognising the ultimate sacrifice that they [Service personnel] have made. I can confirm … that my Department will set aside funding for new higher education scholarships for the children of deceased Servicemen and women. And we plan to go further. It is wrong that so many people, on leaving the Armed Forces, should face hard times. Liam Fox and I will honour our debt to them. That is why I can also confirm that my Department will continue funding Service leavers to get new qualifications. And we plan to offer an enhanced scheme that covers more ex-Service personnel. Quite simply, it is the right thing to do.’

Understanding the threat of terrorism need not be the preserve of the few

Distance learning course provides an essential introduction to a vast and complex subject

For many organisations – including the Armed Forces, government bodies and the commercial sector – terrorism is a subject so vast and complex that educational insight can rarely be offered to the majority in an effective way. This is despite the knowledge that understanding how and why terrorists plot against countries, people, governments and corporations can make a vital difference to the efficiency of security strategies.

The Certificate in Terrorism Studies, offered via e-learning over the internet by the University of St Andrews and Informa, fills this knowledge gap and helps participants prepare to meet the challenges of evolving terrorist techniques.

It is said that the ultimate weapon in combating terrorism is an educated mind. The Certificate in Terrorism Studies will enable students to understand the ideologies, aims, beliefs and modus operandi of major terrorist groups. Analysis of key trends enables not just better understanding of what terrorists are planning but also feeds in to the development of counter-terrorism strategies that can protect an organisation’s interests.

Course director Max Taylor believes that ‘knowledge gained by individuals through the Certificate's systematic education can be turned into best-practice strategy to help protect people, infrastructure and investments’.
