Close protection training with Primus
Close protection (CP) is all about guarding people, with operators keeping their clients safe from the unwanted attentions of anyone – from criminals and the insane, to autograph hunters and those who are simply intent on causing trouble.
Much of the work involves threat assessment and planning. Teams then deploy to protect people from high-risk threats during business trips overseas, lesser dangers at sporting events, riots and book signings, and low-risk situations such as company annual general meetings and the shopping expeditions of ‘high net worth’ individuals and their families.
The commercial industry is generally divided into three main sectors. High-profile businessmen operating in dangerous places like Central America and parts of the former Soviet Union, then there are people, again usually businessmen or celebrities, who need protection while travelling abroad and also at home because of their profile or business activities.
Finally, there are the pop stars and ‘glitterati’ who are the focus of constant media and public attention, which is not always welcome. All are at risk of attack; the level of personal profile does not always reflect the likelihood and severity of the attack, and more and more people are joining the ranks of those who feel they could be threatened.
Qualifications and training
Cardiff-based Primus Training and Consultancy Limited is one of the UK’s premier close protection training organisations who offer people the chance to become a bodyguard.
Sean Colsey of Primus Training has provided security for Beady Eye, Stereophonics, JLS, Joe McElderry and Premiership footballers, as well as corporate clients and royalty. He has 12 years’ experience in the Armed Forces with specialist units. He is no stranger to pressure situations and has used that experience to develop one of the UK’s premier training organisations, Primus Training, and the operational side Primus Protective Consultants.
Colsey says: ‘The skills and work of a CPO are often varied, but the SIA insisting that every CPO is to hold a valid licence means that people can feel safe in the knowledge that their CPOs have been trained to a consistently high standard and are fit to do the job in hand, and we are currently developing some of the best CPOs in the business.’
For anyone wishing to enter the industry, the quality of training and the quality of the instructors delivering it are all-important. Obviously, a 140-hour course cannot cover the same ground as one lasting much longer, but the right instruction can deliver the basics for the newcomer. Because reputation is everything in the CP environment, simply being trained by an expert has a spin-off for students.
Courses run throughout the year and spaces are available. Further information about Primus and the other courses it offers is available at www.primusgroup.co.uk or by telephoning 029 20 757 578. Primus Protective Consultants recruits directly from its course delegates, see: www.primusprotection.com .

Wilplan Training: new location, same high-quality course provision
Following recent expansion, Wilplan Training Ltd is pleased to announce its relocation to a brand new training centre. Managing director Gareth Williams says, ‘After five great years at our previous centre, and continuous expansion of the number of courses we are able to offer, we realised that the time was right to look for larger premises with improved facilities, to enable us to fulfil current demand. We didn’t want to move too far away as we’ve built a good reputation here and still have lots of local clients, as well as those individuals that travel from all over the UK to train with us – and of course not forgetting our international students.
‘After viewing the new training centre at Park Hall it really became the obvious choice. It’s bigger, in a great location, and provides better access and better facilities for students and employees alike. It’s also in the grounds of Park Hall and is just a short stroll away from Park Hall Hotel & Leisure Club for those requiring the residential option. We’ve been able to secure fantastic rates, which include not just bed, breakfast and evening meal, but full use of the state-of-the-art gym, pools and leisure facilities. There’s even free wi-fi access throughout the training centre and hotel. As far as residential training courses go, I really do believe this is a great package.’
In addition to the level 2 Security courses, Train the Trainer courses required for the civilian training environment, and the ever popular BTEC level 3 award in Close Protection, Wilplan now offers BTEC level 3 in Foot and Mobile Surveillance and the 7304 Certificate to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. Also, military personnel applying for courses in 2011 will be entitled to an additional 10% discount on all standard course fees.

Prepare for a counter-terrorism career while still in service
With the continuing global threat from terrorism, opportunities to work in counter-terrorism and close protection roles abound – and is often a popular career choice for a post-military career.
One route many personnel take is to study the Certificate in Terrorism Studies from the University of St Andrews, which is the most popular course for those seeking to gain an education in understanding and offsetting the terrorism risk. The course is delivered by part-time online e-learning, allowing Service personnel the flexibility to study according to their own schedule.
Military training and experience, coupled with an academic insight into terrorism, provide a solid foundation to future career choices. The Certificate in Terrorism Studies provides this insight and is designed to be studied over 16 weeks, with course materials accessible wherever you have internet access, along with associated online discussion forums and email access to tutors at Europe’s longest-established centre for the study of terrorism and political violence.
Over 2,500 students have undertaken the programme. Not only do a significant proportion of the alumni represent the UK Armed Forces (both serving and post-service), other Armed Forces and overseas personnel are represented in large numbers, along with participants from the emergency services, close protection, and the private and public sectors.
With modules covering key issues, ideologies and motivations, modus operandi, policing, aviation and maritime terrorism, everyone can find module choices that will appeal to them. Additionally, a new module in critical infrastructure protection has just been launched to address this important topic.
Successful participants are awarded a Certificate by the renowned University of St Andrews, with the course accredited with 15 credits at level 7 of the Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF). A notable advantage of this programme is that it qualifies for ELC funding.

The professionals’ path to security
Security is a large marketplace, with many sectors to choose from offering various challenges all over the world, depending on what is right for you as the individual seeking work within this industry.
Close protection is still a large industry in today’s market and not only focused towards the Middle East, despite common perceptions.
However, it is changing, with much more focus on the overall package of security management as a whole.
This is seeing current operators take more advisory, training and managerial roles rather than just the physical protection element, thus the individual choosing this career path does need to ensure that skilled investments are made as part of ongoing career development, with time spent on obtaining sound qualifications recognised by the industry, and becoming more diverse and able to multitask.
A good recent example of this is the antipiracy field. It’s important to note that even this issue has been around for a very long time, but we have seen more shipping companies approach security firms and personnel to obtain qualified individuals (Ship Security Officers) with which to protect fleets and movements worldwide from the increasing threat of piracy.
This highlights the real need for individuals to maintain their overall skill set, but also to ensure that the qualifications they hold are applicable, as security changes with its own unique trends based on climate and so on. For this reason, development is a key aspect, allowing you to stay employed as contracts closeand open, maintaining accurate legislation and knowledge of the industry.

Close protection: choose your training course wisely
For Service leavers, navigating through a range of possible security courses in preparation for life in civvy street can often be a daunting minefield. If the UK private security industry attracts you, then it is highly likely that formal training leading to a Security Industry Authority (SIA) licencetopractise qualification will be required. You could consider security guarding, door supervision, close protection, management or some other securitysector role.
Anubis Associates Limited is a modern private security company that prides itself on providing a range of highquality services.
Anubis’s former Armed Services and police directors possess an enviable combination of backgrounds that, in addition to being highly qualified, are also operationally current.
In selecting an SIA training provider for your career change you need to thoroughly research the best available package offering a quality service that offers value for money – hopefully to match your budget. A cheap price or a short course is no guarantee of quality. It is vitally important to focus on the credibility of the instructors and the reputation of the company. Who actually trained you can often be the key to better future employment. It is vitally important to check the accreditation of a training provider through an independent organisation such as the Career Transition Partnership or Skills for Security. The more checks you do, the better!
Anubis is an approved training provider for the Buckinghamshire New University to deliver the level 3 SIA licence to practise close protection (CP) qualification.

New modular SIA training from 2010
The Security Industry Authority (SIA) has announced that it is to introduce new licencelinked qualifications this year, bringing training up to date and introducing a modular structure. This, says the SIA, follows an industryled review of the specifications that drive training content. The new specifications will reflect current industry best practice so that individuals working in the security sectors undergo good basic training for their role.
Licence applicants will need to take the relevant modules for the sector in which they wish to work and obtain a licence. So – for close protection, for example ( see our feature on page 18) – from January 2010 the SIA will accept:
● the new modular qualification for the relevant sector
● a current qualification, as long as it is less than three years since it was awarded.
This new structure, with core plus specialist modules, will mean less overlap and duplication in content across sectors, which will make it easier to get qualified to obtain more than one licence, as only the required and relevant training will need to be taken for each additional qualification.
