Chancellor Alistair Darling’s preBudget report, released in December, announced that £5 million will be made available via the government’s Strategic Investment Fund to help former Armed Forces personnel set up their own companies. The funding will be used to encourage veterans to consider selfemployment, as well as to produce publicity campaigns with the same aim. It will also be used to pay for ‘business coaching’ for former Service personnel who have no direct experience of business.

 

On making the announcement, the Alistair Darling commented, ‘I want to do more to help those who have served in combat zones and are retiring from the Forces.’ The fund will be jointly run by the Department for Business and the MoD. As this issue of Quest went to press, it was thought that an announcement regarding the full details of the scheme would be made in the new year. As the Conservative Party gathered in Manchester for its annual conference at the start of October, Tory leader David Cameron promised that a ‘big, bold’ welfare shake-up would be on the cards if his party wins the next general election, aimed at ‘getting Britain working’. The Labour Party’s New Deal is one initiative that he said would be replaced by more ‘personalised’ help to get the long-term unemployed into work. Cameron told the Sunday Telegraph that the country was ‘crying out’ for a ‘radical new direction’ and said that a Conservative government would, ‘through tax reform and deregulation’, help employers take on new staff and encourage the creation of businesses. Commenting in the News of the World, he stated that the Tories would embark on changes to the welfare system that had proved too radical for Labour.
