Stephen Howard
Job-hunting led to applications for 10 jobs, requests for interview for four of them, attending two interviews and being accepted for his current appointment. ‘On average it took me at least a full day to research each job and to tailor the letter, application and CV. Research is crucial and, when you get an interview, once again it takes a huge amount of time to prepare.’
Howard is Bursar at Tettenhall College in Wolverhampton, a co-educational independent school with just under 460 pupils of whom 80 are boarders, and a ‘strong military presence. I have responsibility for the business management of the school with a turnover of about £4.6 million, facilities management, catering, grounds maintenance and human resources for the support staff.’ A lower salary is largely offset by his pension, but additional costs include private medical and dental insurance, critical illness or income protection and buying into another pension.
