Neil Wood
Among major world political changes, personal development and career progression plans have recently been put on hold for many Forces people. In this uncertain future, it can be difficult to know what professional training to take next. Those who may be unsure about their next move or want to improve their qualifications - some of whom may have been out of education for some time and would like to ease back in - should consider trying an Open University Openings Course.

These are 14-week courses with no exams or residential schools. Students can choose from five subjects in the humanities, social sciences, maths, and science and technology.

Neil Wood, 30, an NCO with the MT in 1 (UK) Armoured Division Headquarters and Signals Regiment has taken an Openings Course. He believes that his career would benefit from better qualifications: 'I've seen others achieve promotion. I knew if I wanted to get on I would have to bite the bullet and enrol on a course. I was a bit nervous at first but I knew I had to try. I was worried that I would fail after being out of education for nearly ten years and I was worried about possibly looking stupid in front of people half my age.'

OU courses are designed for people to study at home or at work in their own time. Course materials are sent to your place of residence. An organisation chart detailing what and when to study is included with the introductory pack, it is then up to the individual to plan their study schedule.

Wood 'studied everywhere. In my dinner breaks, in the bath, I studied anywhere I had a few minutes. I found the access to tutors very good and reassuring. I got a lot of support and understanding from the tutors because of my job. It was hard to find to the time on a regular basis as things come up and of course work comes first.'

Now working for a BSc in IT and Computing, which he hopes will prepare him for a job when he leaves the Forces, he says that taking 'the Openings and the computing courses prepared me for the degree. It definitely helped my confidence especially since I passed the courses and have now started a degree. Also, the Army has been very encouraging and supportive. Studying with the OU is the way ahead; it helps you in your present job and your career afterwards.'
