Stephen Sheppard
Stephen Sheppard left the Services in July 1994, so has many years’ experience of life as a civilian. The 37-year-old RAF Police Corporal had completed six years in uniform in Newton, Lyneham, Belize, Wroughton and Dharan in Saudi Arabia, and ‘wanted to try something different. We had to deal with all ranks in the Forces, this enabled me to be very confident in dealing with people from all walks of life and business.’
Resettlement consisted of ‘well run and useful HGV driver training’ and he then ‘wrote around to various companies within the area in which I was settled,’ becoming a financial advisor.
Sheppard is now: ‘Part owner of SDH Global Source Limited,’ acting as the resource director, a position he has held for nearly eight years. ‘My job involves finding staff for various positions that our clients ask us to fill. These positions can be skilled engineers right the way through to high level project directors who are often running projects running into tens of millions of pounds. Another part of my job is business development with existing clients and also new clients.’
‘I like the fact that I work for myself and the flexibility that this allows. I also like the fact that that myself and my business partners – if we make any profit – then this goes to us rather than in someone else’s pocket. One of the main differences between my service life and my current work life now is the time off. I used to work a shift pattern, so had a lot of spare time on my hands.’
