Job title: Skilled Fitter/Technician
Job type: Permanent
Full/Part time: Full time
Salary: £31,419 + benefits
Location #1: Dorset
Town: Bournemouth
Closing date: ongoing

Company overview

South West Trains operates around 1,600 trains a day on a network in the South and South West England. We serve more than 200 stations and employ around 4,500 people.
The South West Trains network includes routes through Hampshire, Surrey, Dorset, Wiltshire, Berkshire, Devon, Somerset, and Greater London, serving a mixture of commuters and longer-distance travellers.
London Waterloo is also home to London Underground, serving the Northern, Bakerloo, Waterloo & City and Jubilee lines. Passengers can also connect easily to London Waterloo East for onward travel to Kent, south-east London and East Sussex

Job description

You’ll overhaul and repair units to the required specifications.  This will involve such aspects as major component exchanges, pre-release testing and fault diagnosis, and completion of relevant paperwork. Also, some supervisory work will be required.

As a key member of the team, you’ll have a lot of responsibility in your skilled hands so that our customers can be sure that they will reach their destination safely and on time.

You’ll work with a range of tools and equipment, solve technical problems and ensure our fleet maintains maximum reliability. You’ll be working to high standards … learning new skills as you go.

You’ll need a recognised mechanical or electrical apprenticeship coupled with experience of repairing or overhauling heavy equipment, but not necessarily trains. You must have the core understanding of mechanical and electrical principles.

Ideally, you’ll have experience of working in an environment where vehicle/plant downtime is limited in order to meet customer or operational needs.

We continue to serve our customers by running around 1,700 trains a day covering more than 200 stations. Central to our operations is an efficient maintenance team who keep our trains in peak condition.

Our Engineering Depot in Bournemouth has just won a new heavy maintenance contract for Class 455 suburban trains. This is great news for us, great news for our depot team and great news for the local community, as we are creating a range of new jobs.

Further training will be provided on an on-going basis to enhance your skills. We will also be interested to hear from anyone at Team Leader level.

We offer an attractive pay and benefits package including free travel on our network. Salaries shown include regional allowance.
